What should we know about Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is one of the important vitamins which determines children’s organism homeostasis and bones health.

Its deficit in children under 36 months causes rackets, in elder children – osteomalacia.

Conditions caused with deficit of vitamin D:

  • rackets;
  • osteomalacia;
  • osteoporosis;
  • tumor;
  • diabetes;
  • cardiovascular diseases
  • immunodeficiency
  • autoimmune diseases
  • neurological diseases; depression, dementia
  • parkinsonism,  disseminated sclerosis

 

Food rich in vitamin D:

 

  • fatty species of oceanic fish
  • milk and dairy
  • eggs
  • mushrooms
  • vegetables have minimum content of vitamin D;

 

Prevention:

 

  • exclusive breast-feeding
  • breast-feeding up to 2 years
  • timely start of additional feeding
  • eating food rich in Ca and vitamin D
  • exposure to the sun
  • exception from ration of caffeine-containing (carbonated) drinks, as they wash out Ca from the bones.

 

For the diagnostic purpose, it is the best to determine status of vitamin D (vit. D 25 – hydroxyvitamin)
